Rectangular and Square Steel Tubing

The construction and engineering industries use hollow structural sections (HSS). HSS is a form of steel tubing and is commonly circular, square, or rectangular. In the UK the term HSS is not used. Instead, the basic shapes are named CHS (circular), SHS (square), and RHS (rectangular).

Rectangular hollow structural sections (HSS) are commonly used in welded steel frames which are subjected to loading from different directions. Square and circular HSS are often used as columns.

Difference Between Square Tube and Rectangular Tube

Rectangular tubes are generally used for maintenance and structural purposes. Some examples of applications would be building construction, railings, and truck frames. They are measured by their outside dimensions and their wall thickness.

Which is Stronger, Square or Rectangle Tubing?

Obviously, this depends on the relative size of the sections. Assuming that the rectangular section’s smallest dimension is equal to (or greater than) the square section’s side and their thicknesses are equal, then the rectangular section will always be stronger than the square, for any load in any orientation.
Rectangular and square steel tubing provides great strength-to-weight ratios, which means that less steel by weight is required to accomplish the job. These tubing products also provide outstanding support and compression features, which allow this shape of steel to be used for a wide range of column applications.
For applications that require the strongest possible steel, the tube is generally the way to go. It’s known to be significantly stronger than the pipe, and one of the strongest metal formats period.
