HSS Tubular Steel

Galvanized steel tubing is coated with zinc (galvanized) for use as a protective means to prevent rust/corrosion. It is most commonly used for outdoor structures, such as fences, for water lines, and for projects located near the coast where humidity and salt are highly corrosive factors affecting the lifespan and maintenance requirements of steel.

Steel tubing which is hot rolled was manufactured by molding the steel at a higher temperature. The hot rolling process makes for an easier shaping process and is more affordable than cold rolled tubing. Even though there is no accuracy in dimensions of hot rolled steel tubes as compared to cold rolled steel tubes, hot rolled steel tubes are of high-performance use in construction of structural components, general fabrication purposes, and for heavy-duty purposes in the Philippine constructions and manufacturing industries.

For real estate owners, the distinction is critical. Unlike standard pipes designed for fluid transport, Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) are engineered for load-bearing.

HSS provides a superior strength-to-weight ratio, allowing you to use less steel to support the same load compared to wide-flange sections (Totten Tubes, n.d.). This reduced weight translates directly to lower foundation costs and faster installation times, which is vital for maintaining margins in competitive Davao or Makati developments

 In a high-seismic region like the Philippines, ASTM A500 Grade C is often preferred for its higher yield strength (46 ksi for square/rect) compared to Grade B (42 ksi). However, for mission-critical industrial plants, project managers are increasingly specifying ASTM A1085.

This grade provides tighter wall tolerances and a mandatory corner radius, offering significantly better performance in seismic energy dissipation and fatigue resistance.

Beyond strength, HSS is a favorite for Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS). The smooth, rounded corners and flat surfaces of rectangular HSS allow for “cleaner” designs in open-plan BPO offices or retail malls.

For developers, this means you can leave the structure exposed as a design element, reducing the cost of cladding and suspended ceilings while appealing to premium tenants looking for a ‘modern industrial’ aesthetic.

 Local production is surging, with the Philippines’ crude steel capacity expected to reach 15.2 million tons in 2026 thanks to expansions by SteelAsia and the Panhua Group.

For ‘Jumbo HSS’ (sections with outside diameters up to 22 inches), project managers should coordinate with specialized suppliers who offer in-house 3D laser cutting to ensure precise fitment on-site, which can reduce labor overhead by up to 20%.
