Shipbuilding Steel Plates

Shipbuilding steel plate encompasses a broad category of carbon and alloy steel plates meticulously crafted for the rigors of offshore and marine construction.
Among the common grades in this category are A, B, D, and E, along with the robust AH32/36/40, DH32/36/40, and EH32/36/40 variants, each available in a spectrum of strengths. These plates find their indispensable role in the construction of an array of vessels, including LNG carriers, tankers, bulk carriers, and are used extensively for upper decks and hatch covers.
What sets high-strength shipbuilding plates like AH36, DH36, and EH36 steel plate apart is their remarkable ability to deliver equivalent strength with reduced thickness when compared to general strength steel. This advantage becomes particularly crucial in high-stress areas of ships, where minimizing weight while maintaining strength is paramount.
Such innovative materials play a pivotal role in ensuring the structural integrity and durability of modern maritime vessels, contributing to the safety and efficiency of marine transport systems.
Shipbuiding Standards from Different Countries
  • ABS (American Bureau of Shipping)
  • R (Lloyd’s Register of Shipping)
  • RS (India Register of Shipping
  • BV (Bureau Veritas)
  • NK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai)
  • RINA (Registro Italiano Navale)
  • CCS (China Classification Society)
  • LR (Lloyd’s Register of Shipping)

When it comes to shipbuilding, the selection of the right steel plate grades is paramount. Here are the key grades to consider.

General Grades:

  • Grade A: Designed to withstand impact forces at normal temperatures (20°C).
  • Grade B: Engineered for impact resistance at 0°C.
  • Grade D: Crafted to withstand impact forces at -20°C.
  • Grade E: Engineered for impact resistance even at frigid temperatures of -40°C.

High-Strength Shipbuilding Steel Plate Grades: AH32, DH32, and EH32; AH36, DH36, and EH36; and AH40, DH40, and EH40.

It’s essential to note that the impact values remain consistent across all grades of steel. However, for high-strength hull structure steel plates, certain preheating requirements must be met. When dealing with plate thicknesses exceeding 30mm or when working on angle and butt joints, preheating to temperatures ranging from 120-150°C is necessary before welding.

For plates with thicknesses less than or equal to 30mm and ambient temperatures below 5°C, preheating to 75°C is recommended. When working in conditions below 0°C, preheating within the range of 75-100°C ensures the integrity of the welds. These guidelines are essential to maintain the structural strength and durability of shipbuilding materials, ensuring the safety and reliability of maritime vessels in diverse operating conditions.

Processing for Different Grades

Grade A and B
Grade A steel, with its impact resistance at normal temperatures (20°C), is commonly employed in various shipbuilding applications. Grade B steel, on the other hand, is tailored for impact resistance at 0°C. Both grades undergo rigorous quality control processes, including precise rolling and heat treatment, to meet stringent industry standards. Their
suitability for specific temperature ranges ensures that they perform reliably in diverse marine environments, contributing to the structural integrity and safety of vessels at sea.
Grade D, E (DH32, DH36, EH 32, EH 36)
Grade D and E, engineered for impact resistance at even lower temperatures, require precision heat treatment and rolling to ensure their suitability for cold conditions. Meanwhile, the high-strength DH32, DH36, EH32, and EH36 grades demand specialized preheating before welding to maintain their structural integrity. These distinct processing requirements for each grade ensure that vessels constructed using these shipbuilding plates meet the rigorous standards for safety and performance in various maritime environments.
Alloy Elements Added to Improve Toughness
Micro-alloying technology optimizes the performance of high-strength ship plates, ensuring they meet and exceed expectations. By strategically incorporating alloying elements like Nb, V, Ti, and others into the steel, combined with meticulous controlled rolling processes, this technology not only enhances grain structure but also elevates toughness levels. Such precision engineering and alloy infusion result in ship plates that deliver superior strength and resilience, meeting the stringent demands of the maritime industry.
Direction of Development for Shipbuilding Plate
he maritime landscape has evolved with a growing emphasis on high strength, stringent specifications, and enhanced safety measures, particularly in large-sized vessels. This transformation has led to a gradual decrease in the demand for standard A-class panels and a notable surge in the need for high-strength panels.

These specialized panels are predominantly sought after in the construction of broad vessels, typically exceeding 5 meters in width, often requiring substantial shipboard plates with thickness ranging from 200 to 300mm. This shift reflects the industry’s commitment to meeting elevated safety standards and accommodating the evolving requirements of modern, robust maritime structures.
