Mild steel is a relatively ductile material as it contains a smaller amount of the hardening alloy – carbon – than other carbon steels. It has a low tensile strength of around 400MPa.

Carbon steel is sometimes referred to as ‘mild steel’ or ‘plain carbon steel’. The American Iron and Steel Institute defines a carbon steel as having no more than 2 % carbon and no other appreciable alloying element. Carbon steel makes up the largest part of steel production and is used in a vast range of applications.

Does Mild Steel Rust?

Yes. Mild steel, also known as carbon steel, will rust over time unless it is treated with some sort of protective coating to prevent the steel from coroding. Mild steel has a low carbon content, and the carbon does not help prevent the steel from rusting. Elements that are introduced to steel like molybdenum, titanium and chromium can improve the corrosion resistance of steel, but it does not make the steel rust proof.
